History & Culture

A journey through millennia of rich history

Sri Lanka looks back on over 3,000 years of documented history. From the first Sinhalese kingdoms to the arrival of Buddhism to colonial influences of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, the island has developed a fascinating cultural diversity.

The ancient royal cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Lion Rock Sigiriya and the sacred Temple of the Tooth in Kandy bear witness to the impressive past of this island. Eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites make Sri Lanka one of the most culturally rich countries in South Asia.

The Vedda - Indigenous People of Sri Lanka

The oldest people of the island and their living culture

The Vedda (also Wanniyala-Aetto, "People of the Forest") are the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. They have lived on the island for thousands of years and maintain a unique culture with their own language, traditions and a deep connection with nature.

Today, only a few hundred Vedda live in the traditional way, mainly in the region around Dambana in the east of the island. Their knowledge of tropical flora and fauna, their hunting techniques and spiritual practices make them a living cultural treasure of Sri Lanka.
